The Forest AND the Trees Why Leaders Need To See Both

Effective leaders are able to both see what to do in the next 3 years and the next 3 minutes.

 

This focus on both the here-and-now and the future of one’s organization is a critical skill leaders need in order to take their organization to the next level. Today’s world is changing too rapidly to simply set a three year course and shift into cruise control. When a leader is too future focused, they can come across as a too removed from the organization’s current needs and those they lead won’t have clear direction on what they need to implement today.

 

The result: the organization will start to bog down in the details of today and inconsistent decision making.

 

On the flip side, when a leader is too focused on today’s challenges without an eye for the next several years, their organization will react to the “fires” that are burning today and will stop being proactive. Each day brings a different challenge, a new fire, that can take all of its focus and energy.

 

Soon this organization will experience mission drift, becoming a reactionary organization that responds only to the needs of today, while losing sight of the overall mission of that organization.

 

An effective leader is one who has a clear picture of the future while knowing what needs to be done today. This kind of leader will be proactive, appropriately responding to the needs of today while keeping within the boundaries of the organization’s overall mission.

 

This leader will keep focused on both the forest and the trees, as my friend Dave Jones said recently, boldly leading their organization forward with clarity while adeptly adjusting to the challenges of today.

How We Can Stay Relationally Connected In Our Always-Connected World 5 Tips That Can Make A Quick Difference

We are “connected” to more people than ever but are we better off in our relationships? Are we controlling our media devices or are they controlling us? In light of the growing evidence to the latter, perhaps it is time we need to take a deeper look at the full impact of our always-connected state.

How can we stay relationally connected in our hyper-connected, digitally-distracted age? Here are 5 practical ways we can do this.

  1. Do An Eye Contact Check: The next time you are talking with your friend, spouse or co- worker, be self-aware enough to determine if you are looking directly into their eyes, or looking down at your smart phone while quasi-listening? Maintain eye contact and watch your conversations improve.
  2. Set It Down, Walk Away: Physically set your smart phone, computer, iPad or other said digital device down, put it away, and literally walk away from it at least 3 times a day.
  3. Choose A Time To Unplug: Set an alarm at a pre-determined time every day that signals an exact time when you unplug and detach from the digital world, meaning you are no longer available through your digital devices for the rest of that day or night.
  4. Ask For Accountability: Invite your spouse, friend or roommate to keep you accountable in setting a pre-determined time to unplug and detach from your digital world.
  5. Start With Facebook: Facebook has over 800 million active users, which means one in every nine people on Earth is on Facebook. Facebook users spend on average 15 hours and 33 minutes a month on the site.1 If you reduce your time on Facebook by 10% this month, you just created 1.5 more hours to invest into your face-to-face friendships.

Instead of allowing your digital world to control you, take control of your relationships by fully engaging yourself in undistracted, non-digital connecting time with your family and friends.
